When a baby cries, our first question is often: How can I make the crying stop? Aware Parenting invites us to ask another question too: What might this crying be communicating, and how can I stay close enough to listen?
Babies cry for many reasons. Some cries call our attention to an immediate need—for food, closeness, comfort, rest, warmth, relief from discomfort or appropriate care. Then babies also cry as a form of emotional release. When immediate needs have been checked, the baby is safe, and a caring adult remains present to crying, just welcoming, without trying to stop, trusting the capabilities of babies to process their stress, tensions and trauma.
In this free 90-minute online introduction, we will explore these two broad kinds of crying and what it can mean to accompany tears without ignoring the baby, leaving the baby alone or rushing automatically to suppress every expression. We will get an initial insight in Aware Parenting and its three aspects.
The session is open to parents, expectant parents, caregivers and people who accompany families professionally. No previous knowledge of Aware Parenting is needed. Babies and ordinary family interruptions are welcome; cameras may remain off whenever needed.
A short presentation, guided reflection and time for questions. The event will be held in English on Zoom. After registering, you will receive the personal access link by email. The event will be recorded. If you do not wish to appear, you are welcome to indicate your first name only, switch your camera off. Should you share something personal, you can later request this part to be edited out, or altered with a voice over and different names, hiding your face and name in the editing. This will be briefly explained at the start of the event.
